You may have been a bit perplexed this week if you saw your garbage was still in front of your house at the end of collection day.

Social media was buzzing earlier this week as many people claimed their bags were not picked up and had an orange "oops" or warning tag attached to them.

The City of Airdrie said this is because it was enforcing the rules in the Waste Management bylaw in regards to the proper placement of bags and the green organics bin.

"The Waste Management bylaw does stipulate that when you get collection in the front, it needs to be curbside which means on the street with a half-a-metre clearance from your green cart so we can safely collect your green cart as well," said Susan Grimm with Airdrie Waste and Recycling.

The bylaw is nothing new, according to Grimm, but something that hasn't been regularly enforced over the years. She said it has been hard for their contracted collectors to pick up bags on occasion, especially in the colder, snowier months.

"We understand that this hasn't really been enforced in the past and that many residents have been putting their bags on their lawns for years with no issue. But it's really problematic for our collection contractors, specifically in the winter when they need to navigate over the snowbanks and icy sidewalks."

Now that the message around the bylaw appears to be making the rounds, Grimm said they will focus more on educating people about the rules before stepping up enforcement.

"For the next month and a half, we are going to ease off on the tagging and really work to educate on the correct placement of waste bags and then work with our contractor to allow us to provide that education without enforcement until the end of the summer."
