The Jays Care Foundation unveiled the newly refurbished Jays Care Foundation Field in Chestermere Tuesday, August 2nd.

As part of the Field of Dreams granting program, the Toronto Blue Jays charitable organization provided $150,000 to refurbish the Chestermere Lake Middle School's ball diamond.

"The success of the Blue Jays has created a sudden need for baseball facilities across Canada and Jays Care is committed to providing Canadian children and youth with access to high-quality, safe spaces in which to learn life lessons through sport." said Robert Witchel, Executive Director, Jays Care Foundation.

The diamond which received the upgrades became unplayable, forcing little league teams to practice at soccer fields. Jays Care hopes that the new diamond will help accommodate the growing baseball community.

Both members of the public, and municipal government were in attendance for the unveiling.

"There is a lot of excitement around this ball diamond in our community and we are thrilled to have welcome Blue Jays representatives to the opening," said Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews.

The Field of Dreams is a Jays Care funding program which is dedicated to capital spaces/infrastructure, in an effort to address inconvenient sporting facilities.

Applicants can apply online, and must meet various criteria. For example, all applicants must be grassroots or charitable organizations, and be refurbishing spaces in Canada.

Each grant cannot exceed $150,000, and must improve existing spaces to increase athlete participation, safety, and overall usage.

"It's really not terribly complicated, you just need some really dedicated volunteers." said Witchel.

By the end of 2016, $8.15M will have been invested by Jays Care through the Field of Dreams program.
