Challenging driving conditions continuing

There are reports of fog patches developing on the QEII highway heading in both the Southbound and Northbound directions, which may further impede motorists.

Southbound travel from Airdrie to Calgary on Thursday morning may be slowed with shoulder ice and snow on the highway, icy sections, as well as black ice and icy wheel paths, while Northbound travel from Airdrie to Crossfield may also be slippery and slushy.

According to 511 Alberta, there is also an over-dimensional load scheduled to be moved from Airdrie to Chestermere. The load is slated to begin moving at 9 a.m., though it is unclear if the road conditions will impede this schedule. According to the schedule, the load will travel via:

• South on 8 Street
• East on Highway 566
• South on Highway 9
• South on Highway 797
• West on Highway 560
• North on Range Road 284 to Chestermere.

On Wednesday evening, RCMP warned motorists of slippery conditions between Crossfield and Carstairs, with some motorists reporting having witnessed several vehicles on the ditch on their route from Calgary to Didsbury.

Motorists are urged to drive to the weather conditions and dust off their cars before heading onto the roads, as well as make sure they have windshield washer fluid topped up, as the snow is expected to melt on Thursday, which may make for messy conditions later today.

Nearly five centimetres of snow fell on Wednesday afternoon and into the late evening, though there is no more snow forecast for Airdrie and the surrounding areas. The forecast is calling for above-zero temperatures during the day on Thursday, with fog patches clearing later this morning.

Motorists have reported that road crews have been spotted on various roads in and around Airdrie, including sanding trucks and snow ploughs.
