Unless you've been pulled over recently by a member of the Mounties, and weren't wearing your seatbelt, you may not even know that the month of March has been declared Seatbelt Enforcement Month.

The Alberta RCMP are still trying to get into some people's minds the importance of seatbelts, which have been mandatory accessories in vehicles since first coming into law back in 1987.

It's apparent though that some people still haven't gotten the message, even after 34 years.  The Airdrie RCMP's Media Relations Officer Corporal Gina Slaney says that in 2020, 3,184 motorists were pulled over for seatbelt-related offences in RCMP jurisdictions in the province.  3,047 adults and 137 children were found to be improperly restrained while in a vehicle.

RCMP say the best defense against serious injury in the event of a collision is wearing a properly fastened seatbelt. The simple practice of buckling up before putting your vehicle in 'D' can be the difference between life and death.

The Alberta RCMP encourages both motorists and passengers to practice the following seatbelt safety tips:

  • Ensure the lap belt is positioned low across your hips and the shoulder belt is always sitting securely across the centre of your chest.
  • Do not allow the seatbelt to become twisted. The width of the belt is required to spread the force from a collision across the body (Alberta Transportation, 2017).
  • Use the seatbelts provided on off-road or recreational vehicles.

Corporal Slaney has some other useful information for motorists to keep in their back pocket.   She says motorists are responsible for ensuring both themselves and passengers under the age of 16-years-old are using proper occupant restraints.  The fine for seatbelt infractions in Alberta is $162.

Slaney leaves us all with some words to the wise.  "Please buckle up every time, whether you're driving to work or just around the block.  It could save your life!"
