Beiseker has a new champion in its midst. Cash Friend, a grade 10 athlete has had a busy wrestling season but it was all worth it since he has come out on top.

Friend recently won the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA) 1A/2A final, boys' 56-kilogram (kg) weight class on March 18 in Lethbridge, at the ASAA Championships.

Not only is it a milestone for Friend but it's also one for Beiseker Community School, as it's their first-ever banner in the sport.

The fifteen-year-old has also claimed gold medals at the U19 and U17 Alberta Open as well as the U19 Western Canadian Championship. Leading up to the ASAA Championships, Friend first had to win the Rural Wrestling Provincial Championships in Grand Prairie.

This season total, he has had 56 matches with a record of 45-11, when it comes to just high school he is 21-1.

"There were more kids there than I thought were going to be there. It was my first big rural tournament."

Once qualified for the ASAA Championships Friend faced off against four wrestlers with the final being an athlete from Lester B. Pearson High School in Calgary. Friend attributed his cardio to being one of the reasons he was able to beat his opponent and claim the gold medal.

"Winning for your school is a pretty cool feeling. Especially coming from Beiseker and going into a big high school tournament like that, and nobody knows where you're from."

When asked about what got him into the sport, Friend mentioned he has been wrestling for as long as he can remember.

"My dad wrestled for a very long time and is coaching me now. But I've been wrestling since I could remember. I've never thought of any other sport because I love this one so much."

Friend is a part of the Calgary Roc Wrestling Club, where he has been wrestling for the past 6 years.

When it comes to the rest of his high school career in wrestling, Friend stated he does not plan on slowing down anytime soon and even hopes to take it to the next level.

"I'm looking forward to wrestling for the rest of high school and even collegiate would be nice, maybe going down to the states, they just have a whole different point of view on wrestling and it's so much bigger down there, they get stadiums packed."

When it comes to club wrestling, Friend attended nationals in Vancouver which means he is now ranked when it comes to ranking in Canada for his weight class.

"I got fifth in freestyle wrestling, and third in Greco-Roman style wrestling."

When it comes to the next high school season for wrestling, Friend hopes he can retain his championships and try to go the whole season without a loss.
