According to police, they were called to an Airdrie middle school just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. The altercation involved bear spray.

"The altercation occurred outside near the school and was with a small group of youth who do not attend the middle school. A number of middle school students were outside during the altercation," Mounties stated.

Police underlined that these students were not directly sprayed but were being treated on the scene by emergency personnel and school staff.

Approximately 37 students have been treated. Police had previously asked parents not to attend the school at this time and follow their normal student pick-up procedures.
