A surprise encounter with a black bear in Kananaskis Country that resulted in minor injuries to an individual has prompted the closure of a trail.

Trails in the vicinity of the Horseshoe Loop and Montane Trail, including the Cougar Creek Trail, Grotto Mountain Trail, G8 Trail, Meander Trail and Johnny’s Trail are all under a bear warning, while Lady MacDonald Trail has been closed. The trail will be closed until further notice.

A public advisory by Kananaskis Country officials underlined that a bear advisory was previously in place for the area. The public is reminded that in order to avoid a surprise encounter with a bear, one should:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.

All bear sightings should be reported immediately to 403-591-7755.

Other bear warnings include Mount Lorette Ponds Day Use Area, where numerous bears have been sighted eating berries.
