This fall, some new recreational classes will be premiered at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC).

Baton twirling and pom pom classes will be offered for both boys and girls.

Kim McCann, Head Coach of Revolutions Twirl Company based in Calgary, says she is looking forward to growing the sport in Cochrane.

"We tried an 8 week program back in the fall of last year running with Spray Lakes and it was pretty successful so we decided we are going to come out and introduce Cochrane to baton and we are going to add in pom pom dancing this year."

Pom pom dancing will not be full on cheerleading due to lack of supplies but will be a good introduction to some fundamental skills.

"Like cheerleading, but more pom pom based. We will do basic stunting for cheerleading but not full on cheerleading just because we are running it through Spray Lakes, we won't have necessarily the materials we need to run a full cheerleading class."

Classes will start in early September and run for 12 weeks, and registration will be done through the SLSFSC.

"There will be two classes; they are going to do a 4-6 year old class and a 7-9 year old class, if there are kids that are interested over 9 years old, I know they are considering them. They just wanted to put some parameters around ages."

Registration has not quite opened but you can find it at the SLSFSC.

If classes are as successful as McCann anticipates, they will look at growing the sport and options for a permanent home come spring.
