On Friday and Saturday (August 5 & 6), the Stephen's Backpacks Society kicked off their back to school backpack campaign for Fort McMurray.

Volunteers, including Airdrie MLA, Angela Pitt, stuffed backpacks with school supplies that will be sent to children in Fort McMurray, that were displaced or lost their homes during the wildfire in May.

Nancy McPhee, Executive Director of Stephen's Backpacks said they had set a goal of stuffing 600 backpacks over the course of 2 days but exceeded their goal by stuffing well over 700.

Each backpack has $50 worth of supplies that are targeted for each grade level, but McPhee said that as the grades go up the cost of the needed supplies increases.

"Teen's backpacks are so expensive because of the calculators and the graph paper, and all of the supplies and binders."

McPhee will be doing another backpack stuffing campaign August 20, but between now and then more supplies are still needed.

"There's still lot's of time to donate at Superstore, online cash donations on our webpage www.stephensbackpacks.com, the two CIBC's in town, and the Apple Wellness Center in the lobby."

McPhee is hoping to send between 1200-1500 backpacks to Fort McMurray, as well as 150 backpacks to RVS, and just under 100 to the Calgary School board.
