Time for our bi-annual clock changes which means we get one extra hour.

It's that time of year where our Alberta clocks get set back an hour early Sunday morning (Saturday night) at 2 am. Getting that extra hour of sleep will help make up for the hour lost earlier in the year.

While you're changing your clocks, Airdrie's Fire Deputy Chief James Kostuk talks about how smoke alarms save lives.

“They really cut the risk of dying in a home fire, we want to make sure your smoke alarms and your carbon monoxide alarms are working.”

Kostuk also reminds residents this is the perfect time to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they're ready to keep everybody safe if an emergency was to occur.

“You should be testing these alarms every month, if you have replaceable batteries, freshen those batteries up to make sure you have a functioning smoke alarm. In today's day and age, we have a lot of smoke alarms with non-replaceable long-life batteries. But, it's still a good opportunity to make sure you understand how your alarm sounds when it's activated.”

In the recent election, there was a referendum question asking if Albertans would like to keep changing their clocks two times a year.
