It turned into a very lonely, not to mention very cold morning for two Airdrie City Councillors who turned out for the city's annual Tree Chipping event at the Recycling Depot yesterday (February 2).

Other than a few workers who were on hand grinding the trees into mulch, and Discover Airdrie's intrepid reporter Sam Pike who was there to capture the event on film, councillors Tina Petrow and Ron Chapman turned out to be the only ones hardy enough to shiver through the event.

Small wonder since yesterday's morning temperatures were dipping to minus 20 degrees with a cool....no, make that, frigid wind making the temperature feel closer to minus 30.

The event is held each year to let Airdrie residents take advantage of the "green" project and drop off their Christmas trees after the holidays.  The mulch is then used in city park landscaping.  Not only are trees kept out of the landfill but the resulting mulch helps to further create a beautiful environment.

FortisAlberta supports tree chipping projects in several Alberta communities, including Airdrie.  Arbor-Tech Utility Services donated the equipment used to chip the trees.
