The first Amnesty Day of the year will take place this Sunday (June 2), 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the Town and Country Centre parking lot.

The City of Airdrie and Municipal Enforcement are hosting Amnesty Day, where officers will offer complimentary vehicle safety checks to all visitors, focusing on education and awareness rather than enforcement.

For safety issues found during inspections, there won't be any tickets issued. Instead, educating and informing the public about automobile safety is the main goal.

If you are interested, they are also checking how loud your vehicle can get with a noise meter.

Carlo Margherit, a traffic safety officer for the City of Airdrie hopes that plenty of Airdronians will come out to take advantage of the event.

"A lot of drivers have concerns about if their vehicles are roadworthy or comply with the Traffic Safety Act. This is a good way to do that."

Over the two events last year, around 20 Airdronians showed up, and everybody passed the inspection except one motorbike that was determined to be too loud.

"A lot of people wanted to get their kid's car seats checked, but other than that mostly everything went well."

Unfortunately this year they don't have the staff to check car seats for children to make sure they are in the vehicles properly so Margherit will be unable to check those.

When asked a few times over the last week about when this event will be making a return, Margherit said he is proud to know that Airdronians want to make sure their vehicle is street-safe.

Margherit does hope to host another Amnesty Day later on in the summer but does not have a date or confirmation that it will be happening.

For those who are unable to attend Sunday, Margherit mentioned that residents should give them a call if they want their vehicle checked and they will work out a plan to do just that.
