Reports show Alberta's top doctor took home a hefty bonus in 2021.

Alberta's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, received $227,911.35 in cash bonuses in 2021. The bonus is in addition to her $363,633.92 annual salary, for a combined total income of $591,545.27.

Cash bonuses include overtime, vacation pay-out, northern allowance, vehicle allowance, and lump sum payments. Another Alberta health official who saw a six-digit bonus in 2021 was the deputy medical officer of health, Jing Hu, who received a $142,533.89 bonus on top of their $278,926.99 salary.

Hinshaw's bonus is much higher than top doctors in other provinces. CBC reported that Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s chief medical officer of health, received $342,292 for the 2020-21 fiscal year and did not receive any bonuses.

Also, according to reports, Dr. Saqib Shahab of Saskatchewan received $411,416 in 2020-21, almost $78,000 more than he received in 2019-20.
