A closure order that was issued last week for a hotel pool in Rocky View County has been lifted.

A September 29 Environmental Health Inspection Report found no more violations were present.

According to the now rescinded closure order, which was issued on Monday, September 25,  The “whirlpool” located at Days Inn Calgary, North Balzac was found to have Pseudomonas aeruginosa at levels which are against Alberta Health Pool Standards. Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause, among other things, penuemonia.

According to the report, a sample collected on September 12, 2023, and September 19, 2023, had Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated.

"This is in contravention of the Alberta Health Pool Standards 2014 which states “the quality of water in a public swimming pool operating at greater than 30 degrees Celsius must be maintained so that samples of the water do not show the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.”

The sample collected on September 19, 2023, had an HPC count of 150 CFU/mL.

"This is in contravention of the Alberta Health Pool Standards 2014, which states “the quality of the water in a public swimming pool must be maintained so that have a heterotrophic plate count greater than 100 colony forming units per millilitre in a 100-millilitre sample”.

The report stated that the owner, D3H Hotels Inc. (a hotel management company based in Saskatchewan) and Sachin Pandey - who is also listed as the owner, had to immediately close the premises treat the pool water and submit a bacteriological water sample from the whirlpool.

According to previous Environmental Health Inspection Reports, multiple health violations were noted in the past few months. In a May 2023 report, the presence of the Pseudomonas was also noted, with the report stating that the owner was advised to resolve the issue.

In early July, the health inspection report noted that a water sample that was submitted that week was not processed as the operator wrote the wrong date on the submission form, though this violation was listed as a nuisance and deemed non-critical. Another report in mid-July noted another non-critical violation citing that, 'no record of pool tests completed on July 10 even though the pool was operating. Ensure that tests are completed and recorded each day that the pool is operating.'

During an August inspection, one critical health violation was noted.

"The sample collected on August 15, 2023, had Total Coliforms and Pseudomonas present," the report stated, adding that they advised the water to be treated and to also resubmit a sample.

Between May 2023 and September 2023, the whirlpool had seven records of Environmental Health Inspection reports and six occurrences of violations being cited, and three of those violations were deemed critical.

D3H Hotels Inc. also owns the Days Inn, near the Calgary Airport.
