Albertans are the most optimistic in Canada about the national economy and personal finances, according to the October RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook Index. The study is Canada’s most comprehensive consumer assessment of the economy, personal financial situation, and economic and purchasing expectations.

Albertans lead the country in optimism that the Canadian economy will improve over the next year - 37% compared to 26% nationally . They are similarly optimistic about their own personal financial situation improving next year (39% compared to 32% nationally).

Kent Rupert, team leader with the City's Economic Development department, says Airdrie is seeing this optimism reflected in the number of businesses being attracted to the city:

That said, 50% admit to having no "rainy day" savings and are planning to undertake a number of positive actions over the next year to manage their finances. Thirty-four per cent plan to focus on reducing their debt, 26% intend to spend less, 22% want to save or invest more and 23% say they will take all of these actions.

All in all it's good news for local retailers as the holiday shopping season looms. But Rupert says that consumers continue to be cautious about big ticket purchases:
