The Airdrie Xtreme finally clinched the 2018 AMBHL Championship after a thrilling Game Five last night (March 21st).

The Xtreme and St. Albert Sabres played in the deciding game five yesterday after the Sabres won the last two games in Airdrie to tie the series.

The Sabres scored the first goal of the game in the second period before Tegan Skehar found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

The third period didn’t net any goals from either team which meant overtime was needed for the fourth time in five games.

It wasn’t until the 16:06 mark of the fourth overtime that the winning goal was finally scored, and Airdrie’s Tristan Zandee put it in, winning the 2018 Provincial Championship for the Xtreme.

There’s still plenty of hockey left for the Bantam team as they will soon head to Kamloops for the Western Championships, looking for their first title since 2009.

That tournament runs from March 29th to April 1st.
