Wal Mart Canada has responded to rumours surrounding what happened at the store hours before closing last week.

Several posts on social media claimed the store was over capacity limits after it discounted perishable items hours before closing on May 27.

In a statement sent to Discover Airdrie, the company said that was not the case.

"While some fresh items in our Airdrie store we’re briefly discounted in an effort to reduce food waste, the store was below the required capacity according to our records. Our associates at the door use an app to count customers. The app is specifically configured for each store - based on square footage - to meet reduced capacity requirements."

Alberta Health Services (AHS) said they only received one complaint about the store on Thursday night and Airdrie RCMP was not called to deal with any capacity concerns.
