Alberta Pound and Rescue Centres (APARC) in Airdrie built a mural of Betty White out of painted cat food cans.

The project coincided with the Betty White Challenge, which encouraged those across North America to donate $5 to animal welfare groups on what would've been White's 100th birthday (Jan. 17).

According to the supervisor at the centre, Karlia Engel, the mural was built from 1,500 donated cans.

“We all worked together on it for a few days, a few hours here and there when we had some spare time,” said Engel.

The mural was planned, cans painted and finished in time for White's birthday.

“We will be using all the cans and putting them back in our storage. We'll be using all of them to feed the animals here,” she added.

"We were very blown away by the turnout, it was great. So many donations were coming in, it was hard to keep track of.”

Engel concluded by saying this might be something the staff does annually.

White died on Dec. 31, 2021.
