Six RCMP officers jumped into icy waters as part of the Polar Plunge event to raise money and awareness for Special Olympians in Alberta.

Corporal Gina Slaney with the Airdrie RCMP detachment describes what the plunge is.

"The Polar Plunge is an event that is put on yearly to support the Special Olympics, specifically the Alberta athletes that go to the Special Olympics. This year six of our members braved the cold waters and did the plunge."

Slaney says they managed to collect $2830.

"Just shy of $3,000 and that's super close to the top team in the Calgary area. We're still hoping that we can get some pledges that we can be the top team."

Constable Cory Shultz of the Airdrie detachment managed to collect $805 and was named the top fundraiser for Law Enforcement.

"He raised the top amount of money for all enforcement personnel in the area, so he did fantastically. He was one of the ones that plunged."

Slaney says it's important for the RCMP to get out into the community and support where they can.

"We try to get involved in as many community events like this as we can. It's such an important event. It's amazing to see these athletes go and do what they do, so we want to be out there and support them 100%."
