A 45-year-old Airdrie man has been sentenced to two years in prison with an additional two years probation for sexually abusing his friends’ seven-year-old daughter during a sleepover with his own daughter on a camping trip to Kananaskis Country three years ago.

Court of Queen's Bench Justice Bryan Mahoney, who convicted the man of one count of sexual assault in March, said the two families were camping in June 2008 when the victim came over to sleep with the man’s daughter in his tent trailer. He said the offender, who cannot be named because it could identify the victim, then got into bed with the girl and committed what he classified as a major sexual assault on her. The next morning, the judge said the girl told her mother she pretended to be asleep but was awake during the assault. Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Bryan Mahoney also ordered him to be registered for life as a sex offender.
