Airdronian goaltender Garrett Fuller has officially completed his first season of hockey with the San Diego State University Aztecs.

While the Aztecs were unable to make the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division One playoffs, the team much improved from last season improving on a 1-20-1 to 8-14-1 this year.

Fuller finished his season playing 23 games. He has a  4.11 goals-against average, a .898 save percentage and a 7-13-1 record. The season ended on the weekend as Fuller recorded two shutout games against the Univerisity of Oregon winning 7-0 and 3-0.

"Having family at the games helped, it was kind of all or nothing for those last two games and I was just able to get in a rhythm."

Fuller stated the season was full of ups and downs but it was a season to remember.

"Coming off a season with only one win, I expected some struggles through the year. We had two three-game winning streaks this year, we ended the season with three straight wins and we beat some ranked teams throughout the year. I think we did a great job, being a close group and just going through all the ups and downs of the season together."

Before playing at the university level, Fuller played for the Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. In his final season with the Dragons, he recorded a record of 22-14-3 with a 3.08 goals-against average and a .892 save percentage. Before that, Fuller played for local teams like the Airdrie CFR Bisons U18 AAA team and the AC Avalanche U16 AAA.

Fuller does credit his current success to his development in recent years with the Dragons and Bisons.

"Those teams pushed me to the next level and just allowed me to go somewhere where I wouldn't normally think of going."

According to Fuller, he was a little worried about making the jump to university hockey in the States but is very glad he did. He hopes other young hockey players will be able to take his advice, which is to take the risk and see where the hockey world wants to take you.

While attending the university, Fuller is taking finance and then planning to take a real estate course. Fuller does hope to be playing hockey for the Aztecs for the next three seasons as well.
