The Fort McMurray fire has shaken many lives, including several firefighters who lost their homes while saving others.

With the continued efforts of every fire crew working tirelessly to get the blaze under control, a relief fund has been set up to help the firefighters and their families.

For many Airdrie workers, there is a close personal connection between the crews, with many local members serving on Fort McMurray fire crews in previous years.

"We know a lot of guys up there, a lot of our guys actually used to work in Fort McMurray," said Rob Dawson, a local firefighter, "There is a lot of personal connections, a lot of the guys were up there, actually our guys battling the fires beside them."

Dawson has been organizing a boot drive at Brewsters that will be held on Friday, May 27, to raise funds for the Fort McMurray Firefighter Relief Fund.

"A night where we can all get together and kind of process everything, talk to the public...and you can toss a few bucks in the boot and hopefully support these guys who have had their lives just totally ripped apart."

Funds raised from the event will also support the fund for the family of Cranley Ryan, the Deputy Chief of the Fort Mac Department who lost his daughter and nephew in an accident while they were being evacuated from the city.

Dawson said that firefighters who were part of the crews that traveled to Fort Mac will be at Brewsters to share their story and answer any questions you may have.

Firefighters will be at Brewsters on Stonegate Drive from 5:30 pm until closing on May 27th.
