The AFC Summit Cup hosted in Airdrie on June 10-12 was a huge success, bringing in 215 teams and 3400 athletes.

Airdrie's own local teams took part as well, with 22 teams and all age groups participating in the competition.

Some of the teams that took home medals include the Airdrie Aztecs, Airdrie FC Strikers, Airdrie U18 Boys and Airdrie FC U12 Boys.

Jason Nelson, president of the Airdrie and District Soccer Association, said despite the windy conditions, the weekend was a success.

"Friday, we thought we were going to have some weather issues but the winds blew the rainy clouds away and the sun came out. Sunday was very windy, it made for some tough competitive soccer because you're playing into a wind for half the game and then running with it for the second half but all in all, it was a very successful weekend. The kids had a lot of fun," he said.

Some of the teams that took home medals include the Airdrie Aztecs U16 Boys 3-4, who took home the gold, the Airdrie FC Boys U18, who also took home the gold, and the Airdrie FC Aztec U12 Boys 3-A, who took home silver.

11 out of the 22 teams from Airdrie that played were awarded medals by the end of the competition.

Coming up next for the community teams is the big Community Tournament, which includes all of Airdrie's local teams.

"That's our Community Soccer Tournament. There'll be about 1400 kids participating in that and those are all local kids from Airdrie, and their families are from Airdrie, as well, so there'll be a little bit less traffic involved than there was last weekend but there's going to be a lot of fun to be had, most definitely," said Nelson.

The Community Soccer Tournament starts up on June 24 and finishes up on June 26.
