Beginning today, 725,000 Alberta seniors may be eligible for a 25 per cent discount on personal registry services. The discount comes after an announcement from the province last week.

"As part of Budget 2024, the seniors’ discount on personal registry services will mean annual savings of $16.5 to $20 million for the 2024-25 fiscal year," the province stated.

When seniors visit their preferred registry office, they will be eligible for a discount on services like vehicle registration renewals, driver’s licenses, standard plates, and vital statistics products like marriage licenses. Eligible seniors must be a resident of Alberta and 65 years or older on the day they purchase the registry service or product."

Seniors purchasing personal registry services online through MyAlberta eServices will also be able to access the discount.

Premier Danielle Smith explained that the money seniors save, will be money they can utilize towards expenses like food, utilities and housing.

"Every dollar saved is extra peace of mind. These discounts are another step towards helping seniors handle their expenses and they won't be the last ones we have more in the works. Our goals go beyond taking away immediate financial stress. We want seniors to be healthy and happy as they enjoy an affordable and comfortable quality of life," she said.

Joel Sinclair, the Co-Executive Director for the Calgary Seniors Resource Society added that providing seniors with discounts on registry services and medical driving tests does more than ease financial burdens.

"...It also promotes their well-being and independence.”

However, the seniors’ discount does not apply to corporate and business services, personal property services, commercial vehicle registrations, or optional products such as personalized and specialty licence plates.

"The discount will not apply to enforcement measures like speeding tickets and will not be applied to transactions that took place before April 1. Registry agents have a complete list of services eligible for the discount."
