On Feb. 20, 2022, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Jasper RCMP responded with Jasper Fire Department, Hinton RCMP and EMS to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 16, approximately 1 km west of Jasper House.

An eastbound semi and westbound passenger vehicle collided head-on. Damage to the passenger vehicle hampered efforts to extract the driver, and lone occupant, by witnesses and arriving first responders.

Jasper Fire Department was required to use mechanical means to extricate the driver who was then taken by EMS to an area hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Edmonton.

Tragically, the driver, a 38-year-old male from Calgary, was pronounced deceased in hospital. The name of the deceased will not be released.

The driver of the semi-tractor trailer was not physically injured.

Roads were icy at the time due to rain and snow followed by freezing temperatures that evening. White-out conditions were present at the time.

With the assistance of Parks Canada, JNP Highways traffic was restored, to one lane alternating, while the scene was investigated and cleaned up over several hours.

Jasper RCMP with the assistance of RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstruction continues to investigate this collision. The Edmonton office of the Chief Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy.

No further updates are anticipated.
