Airdrie's 100 Men Who Give A Damn decided healthcare was the way to go at their quarterly meeting on Tuesday night (July 17).

The group, whose goal is to provide $10,000 to one Airdrie charity per quarter, voted to give their donation this time around to the Airdrie Health Foundation.  One of the organizing committee members Jack Lumley explained why.

"All three groups were really compelling but what Airdrie Health Foundation offered was a real good plan of where the $10,000 was going to go.  They've got some ideas around helping out mental health, specifically with children, and it was something that I think touched a lot of people in the room.  Their use of the money to help out with mental health I think, in today's day and age, really resonated with the members."

The plan for each 100 Men meeting calls for members to nominate three charities who then get the chance to explain what it is that they do to the group and then members vote on which one will receive the money.  This time around Lumley says Soap for Hope and Volunteer Airdrie were the other charities that were in the mix.

"All were unbelievably compelling about why we should give them the money.  They were all very good an touched a lot of people."

This time around, 90 members of the group paid $100 each.  The other $1,000 was provided by KTH Developments to make up the $10,000 total.

Lumley says now the Health Foundation will come back to another meeting to articulate what the money meant to their charity and how it was used.  As Lumley puts it, that's something every member of the 100 Men looks forward to.

"Honest to goodness, to watch grown men cry when people are telling us what that money has meant, not only to themselves as the leaders of the volunteer group, but also to the public that they service, it just touches your heart in a way that we often get the chance to see.  Those people coming back and telling us how they've been able to utilize the money is a big significant part of what we do."

The next meeting for the Airdrie 100 Men Who Give A Damn goes on October 23rd at the Woods Restaurant at the Woodside Golf Course.  To find out more about the group click here.
