Thousands in the community will be wearing their best purple outfits today to recognize Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Back on September 4th, Airdrie City Council acknowledged today (September 18th) as Big Brothers, Big Sisters Day, but it’s not just Airdrie taking part in the event.

“It’s actually a nationwide campaign,” says Jason Heer with Big Brothers, Big Sisters in Airdrie, “All across the country in cities like Calgary and Toronto where they’re lighting up all the towers purple. Even in our own city of Airdrie, the Mayor has declared today as Big Brothers and Big Sisters day so we’re really excited about that.”

Mayor Peter Brown touched on the day but more importantly how much that the organization helps the community.

“They support they provide to families is second to none. We’re just thrilled to support the initiative and looking forward to lighting up the city. If you haven’t thought about it, it might be an opportunity, maybe you have some time to mentor someone it’s a great organization to be a part of.”

Heer is hoping that as many people as possible will wear or display their best purple today. For him, being a part of Big Brothers, Big Sisters is rewarding.

“I love what I do. I think it’s the greatest job in the world. I just think it’s great to see us helping young people really discover their potential and not only to better their lives in the future but to be contributing people in society today.”
