Vandalism has cost Rocky View Schools upwards of $70,000 over the last two years.

The most recent incidents of vandalism took place earlier this month at A.E. Bowers Elementary School on the roof top.

“Over the last three weeks, we’ve had an increasing number of cases where individuals have climbed onto the roof of A.E. Bowers School and have caused damage to roof tiles, skylights, and drainage grates,” said Willie Quinn, Director of Maintenance and Grounds.

Quinn said that not only are these vandals breaking the law but they are also putting their own safety at risk.

The most common types of vandalism that RVS has seen includes broken windows, graffiti, and damage to roof drains.

Most of the damage occurs over the summer months, which Quinn attributes to the weather being more favorable.

The thousands of dollars worth of damage has resulted in RVS pulling funds that could have been redirected to facility improvements.

“Schools are private property and being on a school roof – even to play Pokémon GO - is considered trespassing,” said Quinn.

RVS is asking for community support to prevent further vandalism by reporting any suspected cases of vandalism to the Airdrie RCMP.
