One 18-year-old female received minor smoke inhalation and had to be transported to Urgent Care by Alberta Health Services paramedics last night (June 1) after a cooking fire in a home in the Airdrie neighbourhood of Windsong.

Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel says around 9:10 pm, fire crews responded to reports of a fire in the kitchen of a home in the 600 block of Windridge Road S.W.

"When they arrived they found a small fire on a stove top and smoke in the kitchen area.  The fire had extended up into the cabinets above the stove top as well but they were able to quickly extinguish it and open up the area around the stove to ensure the fire hadn't extended anywhere and damage was kept to a minimum."

Rabel says the incident appears to have started when cooking was left unattended.  He says the 18-year-old female received minor smoke inhalation when she did something fire crews strongly warn against.

"She had stayed in the home looking for her cats.  Fortunately, our crews were able to find the pets and return them but we do need people to understand that when there is an incident in the home to get to the outside safely and contact 911."

The estimate of damage is still being investigated.

Rabel is taking the fire as an opportunity to remind people of cooking safety.  He warns, "Let's not leave pots unattended, let's not be cooking on our stove tops with open pots of oil or any of those types of things.  We just need to be safe in our kitchens in order to ensure these types of things don't happen."
