Many local Airdrie residents gathered together at Genesis Place on Saturday, June 18, for this year's Relay for Life.

The Relay for Life gave people the opportunity to walk for those who have lost or have survived their battle against cancer.

This year's event raised a grand total of $44,698.

The top fundraiser for the event was 8-year-old Charlie Duchnij, who raised $5,229 for her grandfather.

"I did candy sales, there was even online stuff and some people actually sent money to me," said Duchnij.

Relay for Life started at 6:00p.m. and ended at 12:00a.m. at the Genesis Place Track Field.

Amanda Kolwich, a staff partner and participant with Relay for Life, said she was walking for personal reasons.

"My best friend is a one year survivor of cancer. My Nana has passed away just 6 months ago and just recently I lost my friends dad, John, to leukemia at the end of May."

Although the Relay for Life walk is done, the Relay for Life campaign is still receiving donations for the remainder of the next 2 months.
