November brings with it Family Violence Prevention Month and Airdrie locals can show attend events to raise awareness and can wear purple to show their support.

This year's awareness campaign is 'Reach Out, Speak Out' and will focus on encouraging Albertans to call the Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818 and give assistance to those suffering.

Community Development Services Manager at Community Links Laurie Jacob-Toews says that the goal for the month it to ultimately raise awareness of a very real issue in the community.

"Family Violence Prevention Month aims at raising awareness about family violence and that's our goal for the events," says Jacob-Toews.

The city will host public events and invite local residents to attend. On November first, the public is invited to join in a vigil walk at City Hall to be held in honor of those impacted by family violence. On November second, the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter will present "Take a Stand" where they will display how to recognize, respond, and refer; the myths and facts about family violence; and how important community support is.

The city will also host private events throughout the month for those directly affected by family violence.

Jacob-Toews says the community can show their support in a number of different ways.

"We would love to encourage people to wear purple. Wearing purple is a sign of your support for Family Violence Prevention Month."

Then, the community can take photos of themselves in the purple clothing and post it with the hashtag #GoPurpleAB or #ReachOutSpeakOut.

"If everyone wants to wear purple one day and send out a picture with the hashtag, that'd be great."
