The Government of Alberta announced the Fair Elections Financing Act on Monday, November 28.

Under the new legislation the maximum individual donation any party or candidate can receive is $4,000.

“Albertans decide elections not big money and special interests. True democracy ensures equal opportunity for all, and these amendments would level the playing field so that political parties, leaders and candidates focus on the strength of their ideas rather than the depth of their donors’ pockets,” said Premier Rachel Notley.

Changes to the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act will aim to minimize the influence of corporations and self interest on the outcome of future provincial elections.

“Last year we banned corporate and union donations and we are now taking the next step to strengthen the democratic process. Our comprehensive approach is aimed at encouraging fair elections and making sure we close back doors and loopholes that allow big money to flow into the electoral process,” said Christina Gray, Minister Responsible for Democratic Renewal.

The NDP have also proposed Alberta's first spending limit of $2 million for individual political parties.
