After a four month extension by the Supreme Court of Canada, the law allowing Canadians the right to assisted death is now legal.

As of June 6, Coordination services have been set up in Calgary and Edmonton to assist individuals who want more information or need access to the service.

Brandy Payne, Alberta Associate Minister of Health, has introduced Bill C-14 to Parliament that is still under review to create guidelines and best practices for assisted death.

"Safeguards must be put in place to protect vulnerable Albertans, that conscience rights are respected while insuring the rights of patients, and that the practice is closely monitored and measures regulating medical assistance in dying are reviewed."

Payne is part of an MLA committee comprised of Dr. Bob Turner and Dr. David Swann, who set up a consultation online survey that was completed by Albertans.

"We heard from more than 15,000 Albertans and they told us that they support medical assistance in dying with the appropriate safe guards in place."

The government will hear from opposition members before moving forward with a regulatory framework.

Once the bill has been passed, Payne said the Government is committed to reviewing the framework and processes of the law after one year, and she understands that the law will continue to evolve and grow overtime.
