Today (October 16) is election day for the 2017 municipal election, as Airdronians head to voting stations and choose the next Mayor, City Council and school board.

Returning Officer Sharon Pollyck explained it is pretty easy to remember where you need to go to vote in this year's election.

"If you live west of Eighth Street, you vote at Rocky View School Administration Building. If you live between Eighth Street and the highway, you vote at the Town & Country Centre, and if you are east of the Highway 2, you vote at Genesis Place."

Voting stations will open at 6:30am and close at 8:00pm. Pollyck said the majority of voters show up between 4:00pm and 8:00pm. Because the City is hoping for record turnout this year, they are encouraging anyone that can to vote earlier in the day.

In order to vote in the municipal election, you need to be at least 18 years old, you must be a Canadian citizen, you must have lived in Alberta for at least the past six months, and you must currently live in Airdrie. This year, approximately 45,000 Airdronians are eligible to vote.

You'll also need to bring ID with you.

"[You] can use up to two pieces, and they need to verify their age, their name, and their address," said Pollyck. "For us, drivers licenses are gold."

Immediately after voting finishes, counting will begin at City Hall. The results will be announced this evening once votes are tallied, and the results will be made official on October 20. Anyone is allowed to take part in the Election Night festivities at City Hall.

Pollyck had this final message to Airdrie as we prepare for the election.

"I just really encourage everyone to get out and vote. Local government, it is the government that most impacts your daily life."
