This spring, the new curbside recycling program will mean changes to how you dispose of your coffee cup.

Currently, coffee cups are allowed in the green organics bins but according to Jill Iverson at the City of Airdrie, the City's is unable to process waxed beverage cups that often make their way into the green bins.

"We're going to start encouraging people to put paper coffee cups in the blue carts when that program starts in April, and unfortunately the wax cups are going to have to go into the garbage."

Iverson said that drink lids will also need to be tossed.

"Although they have a recycling symbol on them, they're very light, and the process that they use to sort all the recycling at the facility makes them too light and too small to actually get sorted."

For now, paper cups are still allowed in the green bins.

"They're welcome to still put them into the organics, but we'll certainly be encouraging that change in April when the program begins."
