It's the most wonderful time of the year... until you get a DUI or get involved in an impaired-driving accident.

The holiday festivities have already begun and there are many more on the way over the next couple of weeks. Airdrie RCMP would like to remind everyone who will be celebrating to not drive impaired.

"We would like to stress that if you know you're going out this holiday season and will be having a drink, please plan ahead and make arrangements for a safe ride home," says Corporal Gina Slaney.

Last December, Airdrie RCMP responded to 46 complaints of possible impaired drivers, with 15 of those investigations resulting in charges. Since the beginning of December of this year, RCMP have already laid three criminal code impaired driving charges.

Slaney says that this holiday season, the RCMP are taking preventative measures around Airdrie.

"We will be having checkstops during the holiday season. They will be spread out throughout the holidays, so please, please be smart and don't drink and drive."

Drivers have several options for getting home safely after having drinks like taking a cab or Uber, designating a driver, or sharing a ride.
