The City of Airdrie now has a new tool to inform residents of any emergencies in their community.

Deputy Mayor Al Jones says that the City now has an emergency alert system that works similar to the Alberta Emergency Alerts you might already have.

“These will be local alerts, similar to notifications you may already receive about your waste and recycling collection. If there’s an incident in Airdrie these notifications will tell you if you need to shelter in place or evacuate.”

The alerts can be received either through email or text messages and you can register online through MyAirdrie.

You’re able to select what neighbourhood you live in along with bordering communities.

Deputy Mayor Jones says the purpose of these alerts is only for emergency situations.

“This will only be used in an emergency so you’re not going to get a whole bunch of texts from us with the exception of, we do two test texts a year and they will be identified as such.”
