Man charged after Sundre town shelter-in-place, school lockdowns Friday morning
RCMP say a 33-year-old man has been charged after schools in Sundre were placed in lockdown Friday morning following a report of a male walking near a local school with a loaded shotgun. Mounties say they were dispatched at 7:28 a.m. to a 911 report of a man with a 12-gauge shotgun. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the town, and schools were locked down. Officers received a tip on the suspect’s whereabouts and set up containment at a residence on 4 Street while members attempted to search for and make contact with the suspect. Police say the suspect surrendered at about 9:15 a.m. after exiting the home. A search warrant was obtained for the residence, where officers seized four firearms located in a safe, one unsecured loaded shotgun, drug trafficking paraphernalia and methamphetamine. Jason Kelly Burns of Mountain View County is charged with assault, two counts of uttering threats, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. RCMP say Burns was remanded into custody after appearing before a justice of the peace and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on Sept. 29.
