Investigation underway into veterans crosswalk damage in front of Airdrie Legion
Airdrie’s Municipal Enforcement says “an investigation is ongoing, an enforcement plan is in place” following a complaint to the RCMP regarding an incident at the newly painted veterans crosswalk outside Airdrie's Royal Canadian Legion Branch 288. The matter has been re-assigned for Airdrie Municipal Bylaw for assistance,” the statement said. In a separate written statement, Brad Tomlinson, team leader for municipal enforcement, wrote, “Airdrie Municipal Enforcement has worked closely in conjunction with the RCMP on this matter and have taken over the file for the remainder of this investigation.” Tomlinson said city roads staff attended and completed a cleaning of the crosswalk and the road. “The damage was inspected by City of Airdrie staff. Damage to the crosswalk was recorded for the purpose of our investigation. The damage would not be considered routine wear,” he said. He added, “The violation within the parameters of this investigation falls under the Traffic Safety Act. City staff are working to preserve the integrity of the crosswalk and will conduct any necessary repairs. Total costs are not known at this time.” Earlier this month, DiscoverAirdrie reported that both veterans' crosswalks, which are painted tributes to veterans, were fully installed in front of the Airdrie Legion on 1st Avenue NE, as well as one that is adjacent to Field of Valour Park and the Gapyeong War Memorial.
