Airdrie's Genesis Place lane pool, dive tank closed until at least mid-October
The City of Airdrie said repairs at Genesis Place will keep the lane pool and dive tank closed until mid-October after hairline fractures were discovered during scheduled maintenance. Related Stories: Airdrie pauses Genesis Place increases; transit rates, service changes start Sept. 2 “These fractures, while not a structural threat, do require repair prior to the pools being refilled as they interfere with the integrity of the pools’ waterproofing membrane,” the city said in a Sept. 8 update on its website. “While we know the lane pool and dive tank will not reopen until at least mid-October, repair of the fractures requires a balance of application and curing periods in the pool basins that prevents confirmation of a revised reopening timeline,” the city said. The city said investigative work is also underway on the leisure pool to ensure the integrity of its basin and water systems. “As a result of the anticipated timelines, the paused swimming lesson registration for September and October is now cancelled,” the Sept. 8 update said. “Should repairs progress ahead of schedule, we will explore opportunities to offer a revised lesson set.” The city said it recognizes “the impact the extended loss of access to the pool is having on our passholders and the community.” A temporary pool-use agreement with VIVO For Healthier Generations begins Sept. 15, allowing Genesis Place passholders to scan their barcodes for public swimming. “View the VIVO For Healthier Generations public swimming schedule at www.vivo.ca/schedules (schedules to be posted the week of Sept. 8),” the update said. “Scheduled adjustments to passes and admissions pricing has [sic] been deferred until the pool reopens,” the Sept. 8 notice said. In an previous update on Aug. 15, the city said the aquatics area would temporarily close Aug. 22 as part of biennial maintenance, and with unexpected basin complications the work was expanded to include tiling and refinishing of the lane and dive basins, tile and grout repairs in the leisure pool, replacement of acoustic panels and lighting upgrades. The Aug. 15 update also said program registration for September and October swimming lessons remained paused, while all other registration opened Aug. 10. “Sept./Oct. swimming lessons registration will reopen once the investigative work can inform pool reopening timelines. The public will be advised at least one-week in advance of the updated registration date,” the city said. “To help offset the impact of longer than expected reduced pool and aquatic area access, we’ve added some additional family play opportunities to our fall schedule,” the city said.
