Fire crews extinguish waste truck fire in Airdrie’s Sagewood community
Airdrie firefighters were called to a waste truck fire in the community of Sagewood on Friday, Oct. 10. Airdrie Fire Chief Mike Pirie wrote in a social media post Tuesday, Oct. 14, that the operator of a residential waste truck “noticed the fire” and “quickly dropped the burning load of waste on the roadway before moving the truck to a safe location.” Access into the area was temporarily cordoned off to pedestrians and public vehicle traffic as crews arrived, Pirie wrote. Firefighters extinguished the blaze using a mix of firefighting foam and water. Storm sewer intakes in the immediate area “were dammed off to limit contaminants from entering the system,” he added. Cleanup and remediation were completed collaboratively by the fire department, the waste company and a contracted Hazardous Materials Response Team, according to the post. No injuries were mentioned.
