The Zone 2 Lacrosse Team claimed the gold medal at the Alberta Summer Games which had seven Airdronians on the team.

The games took place in Okotoks and Black Diamond from July 20-23.

The athletes who helped the team claim gold in a 5-4 overtime win from Airdrie include:

  • Josh Armstrong
  • Cole Boehmer
  • Sheldon Cairney
  • Jake Landry
  • Liam Martin
  • Landry Mitton
  • Kaece Sills

"We went undefeated the whole weekend, the boys were really well prepared. We'd spent lots of time with them talking about what to expect, how to manage the tournaments, energy management, and fuel management," explained Head Coach Al Houghton.

Making it all the way to the final, it was one of the most exciting games that Houghton has been a part of.

"Sitting on the other side of the stands watching, I think it was super exciting, but it was very intense on the bench."

According to Haughton, Airdrie athlete Landry Mitton tied the scoring at five a piece to send it to overtime and then later scored the game-winning goal for gold.

While the team came together in late March, while the team performed to the best of its ability, Houghton mentioned one struggle was coming up with the team.

"Putting a team together with four different teams and all the way up until very recently, we're competing against each other was difficult. I think that the guys were great in combining and coming together as a team."

Zone 2 which had plenty of Airdronians on the team finished third overall in medals with 35 gold medals, 47 silver medals and 38 bronze medals.
