Imagine being published while you are still in elementary. For some students at Windsong Heights schools, it won't be so hard to do so.

Last night, students, teachers, and parents attended the official book launch of the three books written by grades one, three and six classes.

The students worked together in each class to write the books and, in some cases, illustrate for it.

Six grader Abbey Chute said that it was a long process to get the books written.

"Since like January-ish, we've decided to write a book and we spent forever trying to figure out what (it would be) about."

She and her classmates had to agree on what they wanted to put into the book. At first, it wasn't clear what they wanted their book to be about.

"We thought, at first, that we had to have a wolf in it because we are the Windsong Wolves, so we put a wolf in it. We were thinking of how it should be the wolf (as) the main character of the wolf as the main character. We worked from there and kept adding ideas," said Chute.

Chute said that there was a surprising amount of research needed to write the book.

"Some parts were quite difficult because we knew nothing about wolves so we'd have to study (...) how do they run and things like that so we can get it right. Because, if someone who did know about wolves read it, it would be pretty funny to see all of our mistakes."

Classmate German Dhaliwal explained that sometimes the class would disagree on major decisions.

"It was a really hard process, especially with big concepts like titles or what would the storyline be. Sometimes we would have to improvise."

Jackson Connell, another grade six student, said that to overcome those incidences, they used some old-fashioned democracy.

"We kind of had a bunch of ideas and we kind of voted on what ideas what we wanted best. Then, we chose the best of the ones that we voted for."

Each author from every class took home a copy of their book. For students of Windsong Heights, the books will be available in the school library to read.
