Saturday's heavy dump of snow led to treacherous road conditions in southern Alberta and dozens of collisions including one on Highway One near Strathmore that left a woman dead.

A portion of Deerfoot Trail was closed in Calgary yesterday as police and EMS responded to many crashes on the road.  Deerfoot Trail was first closed in both directions between McKnight Boulevard and Anderson Road around noon but the closure was later expanded to stretch from 64th Avenue N.E. to 130th Avenue S.E.

All of Deerfoot Trail was re-opened by the evening.

Calgary EMS said they took seven adults and one teen to hospital as a result of the crashes on Deerfoot.  All of them were in stable, non-life threatening condition.

Last night (February 3) Strathmore RCMP reported that a two-vehicle collision on Highway One eastbound at Range Road 284 had taken the life of an adult female.

The woman has not been identified and the cause of the collision is under investigation.  The stretch of road where the accident took place was closed for a time as a result of the investigation into the collision.

The Calgary Airport recorded 7.4 cms of snow yesterday but some areas received much more.
