At the most recent City Council meeting (Feb 22), Council approved some new additions to the Dr. Jose Rizal monument located in Nose Creek Park.

Jose Rizal was the Philippines national hero when they fought the Spanish colonizers. The country was under Spain for 333 years. The Philippines gained its independence on June 12th, 1898.

Jennifer Lutz, the Team Leader of Community Development for the City of Airdrie, says the monument holds great significance to not only the Filipino community but to the city as well.

“The Rizal monument has attracted 1000’s of visitors as well as local, provincial, and international media coverage. It's been a tremendous source of pride to the Airdrie Filipino community,” says Lutz.

Earlier this year, the City of Airdrie received correspondence from Zaldy Patron, the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary, to hopefully complete the final phase of the project.

“They would like to install four flag poles for the respective flags of the Philippines, Canada, Airdrie, and Alberta. The construction of two solar spotlights will highlight and showcase the monument, and a placement marker for the National Historical Commission of the Philippines will put us on an international registry of Filipino historic sites,” says Lutz.

City Council voted unanimously to accept the presentation for information and allow for the changes to the monument.
