Not a lot of patients approach their dental appointments with enthusiasm. Dentistry, as a branch of medicine, might have made impressive strides toward patient comfort in recent years, but visits are often still accompanied by some anxiety.

For Dr. Mir Dawood, that might be down to practice styles that in many cases remain impersonal.

“A dental clinic shouldn’t feel like a factory where you’re just pushing patients through,” he says. “Actual people are sitting in that chair, and they’re more than a set of teeth.”

Dr. Dawood, principal dentist and owner of South Point Dental in Airdrie, has made a career out of practicing dentistry in smaller centres, as he finds the relational element to be key to the overall well-being of his patients.

“You’re running into the same people you’re treating while at the grocery store, or even just walking down the street. It means treatment is more of a personal relationship, so you treat each of them like family,” he says.

What sets South Point Dental apart, explains Dr. Dawood, is its small-town, family-oriented approach where a patient won’t see a different dentist, or even hygienist, when they arrive at the clinic.

“Every time they come in,” he says, “they’re going to build relationships within our clinic, which will build a sense of trust and familiarity because nobody likes change – especially when it comes to their dental work.”

Located at 2926 Main St S #121 in Airdrie, across from Walmart and Home Depot, South Point Dental began providing family dentistry service last November at what was formerly Sonata Dental, and in the year since has grown its reputation to the point where it’s now open five days per week, where previously it was three.

South Point is now open Tuesdays, 10am to 6pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 7pm, Fridays from 9am to 3pm and Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. It also caters to all ages, from children to seniors, and provides a comprehensive suite of services.

In addition to check-ups, cleanings and fillings, Dr. Dawood points out that he and his staff can also do wisdom teeth extractions, Invisalign, veneers, crowns and full smile makeovers.

“We do Botox as well,” he adds. “Both cosmetic Botox and therapeutic Botox. Then, to make people’s lives a lot easier, we can do all of it under IV sedation.”

Dr. Dawood is trained in IV sedation and says it can help make the entire dental experience a lot more comfortable for the patient.

“We work with as many people, as many treatments and as many anxiety levels as we can, from pediatric dentistry to geriatric dentistry, inclusive of denture repairs and relines,” he says, adding that South Point’s goal is to serve the overall dental needs of the entire community.

“We’re a clinic that’s looking to provide comprehensive family dental care to people of all ages,” he says. “We have a small-town sort of atmosphere and we offer just about every service so patients don’t have to be running here, there and everywhere to get their dental work done.”
