New distracted driving legislation and penalties came into effect in Ontario yesterday and now many Albertans are calling for stiffer penalties here at home.

Under the new laws, drivers that are caught distracted driving in Ontario could face up to a $1000 fine for their first offence.

Currently in Alberta, if you get caught distracted driving you could see a fine of $287.

Many people in Alberta want to see stiffer penalties to help discourage distracted driving in our province.
