At last week's Rocky View Schools board of trustees meeting, the issue of requesting modular classrooms for the 2021 school year was on the agenda.

"This is something the board has to do every year," says Board Chair Fiona Gilbert. "It's a timeline of government that we need to submit by the end of October a list of requests for modular classrooms, otherwise known as portables to address growing enrollment needs while we wait for new schools to be built."

A total of 21 units were requested which is broken down into eight used units which would be relocated from other Rocky View schools and thirteen new unit requests. There is also the need to request the funding dollars from the province to relocate the portables, which comes with a hefty price tag of approximately $150,000 per unit.

Of the 21 modular requests, 10 are for Airdrie schools.

RVS says enrollment continues to increase at Bert Church High School, which is in need of six modular units and W.H. Croxford High School, which needs four.

It's projected that Bert Church will be at 114 per cent capacity in 2021 and W.H. Croxford will be at approximately 106 per cent next year and 113 per cent by 2022.

RVS says the new modular classrooms will help bring utilization back down below 100 per cent.
