Airdrie RCMP are reminding pedestrians and motorists about proper road etiquette as winter conditions roll in across Rocky View.

With loss of sunlight and added snow, RCMP say they see more collisions involving pedestrians occur in the winter time.

Cst. Francine Hennelly with the Airdrie RCMP says pedestrians have as much responsibility to road safety as the drivers do.

"Make sure that you look both ways before you step off the curb, and always follow the rules of the road, use marked crosswalks and follow the pedestrian traffic signs and signals."

Cst. Hennelly says that as a pedestrian you should always be predictable and not dashing out into the road.

"Always make eye contact with the driver before crossing, even at marked intersections or crosswalks, you just never know when a driver may not be paying a hundred per cent attention."

As for motorists, Cst. Hennelly says distracted driving is deadly as law prohibits anything that could distract you behind the wheel which includes applying makeup, eating, or even drinking a coffee.

"Take care and slow down, make sure that you're not operating a mobile device while driving, we all know it's illegal to hold, operate, or communicate, or watch the screen of any hand held device but sometimes that reminder is necessary."

While most adults will know the rules of the road, the RCMP are advising motorist to pay extra attention where students or children may be crossing the road.

"Kids until they're about 8 years of age, they can't determine whether a vehicle is moving or not or how fast a vehicle is traveling so it's really important for drivers to watch for children walking on medians, roadways and curbs," adds Hennelly. "When you are out and about with your kids, follow the rules of the roads as well, don't jaywalk, don't go where you're supposed to go, sometimes we like to cut corners because we're in a hurry but just slow down, obey the laws, teach your kids the right things."
