The old RCMP station has officially been torn down and new construction will begin in spring.

The new building will be owned by Airdrie Housing Limited, which is the cities affordable housing initiative.

Airdrie Housing Limited is still waiting on permits to be approved but the hope is that they will come through soon.

The new building will include 6 to 8 retail spaces on the main level and commercial space will be set up on the second floor.

Shelley Sweet, Managing Director at Airdrie Housing Limited also said the building will include 18 units of affordable housing.

"This is really a wonderful way to help add more stock in affordable housing units in our community and provide a sustainable financial model as well."

Sweet anticipates construction will be complete by April 2017.
